A goose is flying south for the winter at a constant speed. Keep in mind that one mile is 1.61 km , and one pound is 454 g . The goose has a mass of 16.4 lb (pounds) and is flying at 7.30 miles/h (miles per hour). What is the kinetic energy of the goose in joules?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Mass of the goose = 16.4 lb x ( 454 g / 1 lb) x ( 1 kg /1000 g) = 7.4456 kg

Velocity of the goose = 7.30 miles / h x (1.61 km /1 mile) x (1000 m / 1 km) x (1 h /60 min) x ( 1 min /60 sec) = 3.2647 m/s

The formula to determine the kinetic energy is as follows:

K.E = 1/2 mv2

Here, mass of goose is m, and velocity of the goose is v.

Substitute 7.4456 kg for m, 3.2647 m/s for v .Determine the kinetic energy as follows:

K.E = 1/2 (7.4456 kg)(3.2647 m/s)2

K.E = 39.68 kg.m2 /s2

Now,

1 kg. m2 /s2 = 1 Joules

Thus, the kinetic energy of the goose is as follows:

= 39.68 kg.m2 /s2 x (1 Joules/1 kg. m2 /s2)

= 39.68 Joules

Thus, the kinetic energy of the goose is 39.7 Joules [ 3 S.f].
