Endocrine glands

  • They secrete their products into a duct.
  • They are ductless glands and they secrete their products directly into blood stream.
  • Their secretions include : Saliva, sebum, tears, cerumen.
  • Their secretions include hormones such as growth hormone, prolactin, thyroxine.
  • Examples : Lacrimal glands, salivary glands, sebaceous glands.
  • Examples : Thyroid gland, Pituitary gland, adrenal gland.


Unicellular and multicellular glands :

Multicellular glands

  • They comprise of only single cell that produce secretion. They are present inbetween epithelial linings.
  • They secrete their producrs via exocytosis.
  • When epithelial tissue invaginate in deep tissue it forms multicellular gland.
  • It contains a duct at its proximal region through which the product is secreted.
  • Examples : Mucus cell, Goblet cell.
  • Examples : Salivary glands.
