Justify selection of a non-destructive testing method to be used for inspection of welds on a 3m high 2m diameter steel storage tank on a remote worksite.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Since the work is at remote site and tank is not very large in size, visual inspection along with die penetrang test will be quite useful for following reasons :-

1. Visual inspection requires minimum equipments for testing, hence at remote locations only few equipments need to carried.

2. Since the weld is simple, visual inspection at the beginning and end of each process will be adequate to meet the needs.

3. Visual inspection is most cost effective method of weld inspection, and it can detect almost all surface flaws , here in this case , storage tank being not a critical component, only surface defects need to be identified.

4. If holes and pores remains unidentified by visual inspection, dye penetration test can be used to locate them.

XSORT Method of Gender Selection When testing a method of gender selection, we assume that the rate of female births is 50%, and we reject that assumption if we get results that are unusual in the sense that they are very unlikely to occur with the 50% rate. In a preliminary test of the XSORT method of gender selection, 14 births included 13 girls. Assuming a 50% rate of female births, find the probability that in 14 births, the number...

Describe the five different techniques demonstrated. Background Non-Destructive Testing During the design process great care must be taken to match the design to the application. This process involves, among others, material selection, material processing, and service condition analysis. As we have found through the material outlined in the text a great number of decisions have to be made during the design process to insure that the product meets all of the needs of the application. Once a product is produced...

Statistical Significance. In an experiment testing a method of gender selection intended to increase the likelihood that a baby is a girl, 1000 couples give birth to 501 girls and 499 boys. An analyst argues that this fails to provide evidence that the method has any effect, because the probability of getting these results by chance is 0.487, or almost 50%.

Assume that a gender selection method was used by a couple trying to conceive a girl. Let x be the number of girls in three births. Assuming that the probability of using this gender selection method is 63% effective in conceiving a girl, list the probability distribution of a couple having three children. x P(x) 0 1 2 3 (Please show all work.)
