Identify the Test that is required and explain why:
A researcher uses heart rate as a measure of excitability in rats. He knows the average heart rate in rats and compares his sample of rats to that average. The sample has been bred with the hope that as a group the rats have a less excitable temperament.
The test we will use for this scenario is t-test for population mean with unknown std deviation.
Because the researcher knows the population mean heart rate of the rats and wants to compare with a sample mean of heart rate of rats and do not the standard deviation of the population which results in researcher will use the sample deviation.
Need to test : The sample has been bred with the hope that as a group the rats have a less excitable temperament.
Null hypothesis: =
Alternative Hypothesis: <
Therefore, the suitable statistical test is t-test for population mean with unknown std deviation.
