ASBESTOS POLLUTION
Asbestos is a naturally occuring silicate mineral. They have a long, thin fibrous texture. Chrysotile (white asbestos) is the most common form of Asbestos and is commonly used in the construction industry. On account of the health risks that it posses, certain countries like Australia have banned the use of Asbestos completely. However, traces of Asbestos would be found in age old constructions such as residential buildings, industrial buildings, vehicles etc. The process of removal of Asbestos from existing structures is called Asbestos Abatement.
The presence of Asbestos in the environment causes severe risks to humans and other animals on earth. However, they are not known to cause much threat to plant life.It mainly causes three types of pollution.
Air pollution- The various sources of air pollution are direct and indirect occupational exposure, exposure to mining and other sites that causes disturbance to the existing asbestos fibres in old buildings, vehicles etc. Major occurence of asbestos air pollution is when the asbestos disintegrates. As Asbestos is friable, it easily disintegrates into tiny fragments and quickly spreads in the air. When inhaled, it causes severe diseases like lung cancer, Mesothelioma, Asbestosis etc. It is equally dangerous to animals and human beings.
Water pollution- Next major type of pollution that Asbestos causes is water pollution. Asbestos fibres are microscopic and airborne. When they enter into drinking water and other sources of water, it posses danger and could be a reason for the diseases said above, through ingestion.
Soil pollution- Asbestos also causes soil pollution. The microscopic fibres that have settled on the soil when triggered by any disturbing forces such as mining activity or demolition activity, disintegrates and releases into the soil and groundwater. This again pollutes the soil and posses danger to life.
