You’ve been in your new executive management position for barely a year and recently you’ve discovered that a relatively new executive assistant named Andrew has taken a second job working nights and weekends. Andrew has been at your company for only 3 months, but has proved to be reliable, resourceful, and intelligent. Andrew has taken the second job to earn an extra $250/week, which he is saving to go back to school.
Your company has a policy against moonlighting because it expects employees to give their best each day on the job. If they spend what would otherwise be leisure time working for some other company, they won’t be fresh, alert, and productive when they come to work for you. At the same time, you remember how you worked several jobs to save money for graduate school. If you had been able to make enough money at one job, you wouldn’t have pushed yourself to work three. You think briefly about giving Andrew a raise, but then recall that the company policy is not to review new employees for raises or promotions until they’ve spent at least 6 months on the job. Still, it would be a shame to see such a promising employee lose his spark from overwork and fatigue.
1. 1. How does this dilemma impact you as the manager?
2. 2. What are the advantages/disadvantages of giving Andrew a raise before the customary period?
3. 3. As the manager, what will you do? Will you break company policy and give Andrew the raise after only 3 months? If not, how will you handle the moonlighting situation? Explain your decision.
1.As a manager I am very much impress with the hard work and promising nature of the Andrew but question is how to reward him for his work.i will really feel guilty or down with empty hand .Might be he will look towards me with very much hope but I am helpless.
2.ADVANTAGES OF GIVING ANDREW RAISE :
*He will feel motivated and will work more harder.
*He will feel more engaged with the company .
*It will encourage other employees as well to work hard to get raises.
DISADVANTAGES OF GIVING ANDREW RAISE:
*It will break the policy of company therefore wrong message and image will convey that company can break its policies.
*might be ANDREW skip the job and move towards another company. To get more benefits .
.3 I will work According to company policy I will not give any promotion or raises until completion of six months working period but to motivate him is very very important that I can do by praising him for his work ,giving his example to other employees, giving him some authority or important responsibility of the company so that he feels more power.
