2. A study of ventricular hypertrophy looked at the exchange frequency, β, of the relative blood volume in hypertensive patients and compared it to a known value of exchange frequency. A sample of 15 hypertensive patients were used and the data is given below, measured per minute (min 1):
4.2, 8.5, 6.4, 10.7, 11.0, 12.6, 3.2, 12.8, 7.9, 13.8, 12.1, 7.4, 11.6, 14.7, 11.4
The previously published value for the mean exchange frequency of non-hypertensive subjects is known to be 7.4 min-1.
a) Is the mean value of the exchange frequency significantly different for hypertensive patients than the published value for non-hypertensive subjects? Test at 90% confidence. Assume the hypertensive subjects’ exchange frequency is normally distributed.
b) Describe the meaning of a Type I error in the context of this problem (that is, what would it mean to make a Type I error when doing this particular test?).
c) Describe the meaning of a Type II error in the context of this problem (that is, what would it mean to make a Type II error when doing this particular test?).
IMPORTANT NOTE: Please to use the p value method for the question. Conclusions must refer to the actual context of the problem/question being asked. As the question asks to describe things “in the context of the problem”. Make sure that your answer refers to the specific situation being described for this question.
