Describe the development of the resting membrane potential in cells. How is it established. velopment of the resting membrane potential in cells. How is it established.
Ans. The resting neuron develops voltage across its membrane called the resting membrane potential. The resting potential is develoeped when in neuron there are concentration gradients across the membrane for Na+ and K+, the ions than move down their gradients via channels, leading to a separation of charge that creates the resting potential. It is established by the difference in the permeability of ions. All negative ion accumulate on the inner side and positive on outer side of the cell membrane. As the K ion is -94mV, Na ion is +8mV and Na- K pump is -4mV which result in resting potential of -90mV in brain. This resting potential is maintained.
