What is meant by “the importance of place” in early American science?
The advances in science and its application was a popular topic discussed under the category of the importance of Place, by the United States government employees. This paper is exposed to the public domain. This paper is presented in the 2000 international symposium on society and resource management in Washington.
Place, according to some authors means the spatial distribution of social and economic activities. These economic activities involve various costs of doing business in different places. The place according to others is something that triggers an appreciation and attachment apart from the beautiful aspects of its landscape. A place has to be looked at with a perspective of some action and meaning.
The knowledge of place is applied to the resource planning and management and the social scientists have certain tools and conceptual frameworks allowing the managers to assess, access and monitor the sociocultural perspective of places. More attention was on the role of place and its impact on the recreation of people along with tourism choices and experiences.
The understanding of the effect of different geographic scales of knowledge might help the managers to design much more clearly interactive processes. It is also examined in certain situations that the interests, values and images of people is attributed to the Rocky Mountain Front in Montana. The meanings of the place names in certain cases can be associated with the governance, conservation and property ideas. Sense of place often is connected with attitudes and expectations of appropriate and inappropriate management.
Some authors have seen that sense of place is associated with the measure of community attachment as the attitudes of the residents are linked with the nearby areas. In a study done in Florida, it was found that physical natural landscape is important to associate some people to the community.
