Mitochondria:
It is present in cytoplasm.
it is a cell organelle present in cytoplasm in the shape and size of Mitochondria depends upon the type of cell.
the number of Mitochondria present in cell also depends on the type of cell.
mitochondria is a double membrane bound cell organelle, only present in eukaryotes.
Two membranes:
1. Outer plasma membrane.
2. Inner plasma membrane.
A particular space is present between outer and inner membrane call as perimitochondrial space.
In the inner membrane a fluid is present called as matrix.
the matrix of Mitochondria have its own double stranded circular DNA. Multiple genes are present for the functioning of Mitochondria.
Eukaryotic mitochondria contains 70s ribosomes.
The inner membrane of Mitochondria have multiple integral proteins in the membrane have important role in energy profuction.
Function:
in the mitochondria energy is produced in the form of ATP by the use of multiple proteins and complexes.
mitochondria is called as powerhouse of cell.
some reactions glucose conversion also occurs in mitochondria.
krebs cycle and electron transport system occurs in mitochondria.
mitochondria have its own DNA so these are able to produce proteins it is necessary for its functioning.
Mitochondria does not depends on nuclear genes for their proteins.
