is baseball Is position variable nominal or ordinal? Why?
1) Baseball is a bat and ball game played between two opposing teams who take turns batting and fielding. Within the game there are positions in which each player can play in. There are nine fielding positions in baseball. Each position conventionally has an associated number, for use in score keeping by the official scorer:
1(pitcher) , 2(catcher) , 3( first baseman) , 4 (2nd baseman) , 5(third baseman) , 6(shortstop) , 7(left fielder) , 8(center fielder) , 9(right fielder).
collectively these positions are usually grouped into 3 groups : the outfield (left field , center field , right field) ; the infield(first base , second base , 3rd base and shortstop) ; and the battery (pitcher and catcher).
Traditionally , players in each group will often be more able to exchange positions easily ; howeverthe pitcher and catcher are highly specialized positions and rarely will players at other positions play there.
Therefore, baseball is a position variable.
2) categorical data and numbers that are simply used as identifiers or names represent a nominal scale of measurement. Numbers on the back of a baseball jersey and your social security number are example of Nominal data. First , second and third places represent ordinal data.
