Describe one of the most recent disease outbreaks, and the role of epidemiologists (descriptive and/or analytical) in addressing it. What questions would you ask an epidemiologist, if you had the chance to interview one?
Ans - One of the most recent disease outbreak is COVID-19 . On 31 December 2019, WHO was informed of cases of pneumonia of unknown cause in Wuhan city, China. A novel coronavirus was identified as the cause . Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases. A novel coronavirus (nCoV) is a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans .The new virus was subsequently named the "COVID -19 virus".
Role of epidemiologists is to study diseases within populations of people. They plan and direct studies of public health problems to find ways to prevent and to treat the problems. In case of COVID-19, there role has been very important as they worked close to the ground and picked up on spikes in disease in the areas of their work. Lockdown testing and treatment is also important but if cases were not picked up by epidemiologists in the first place , then it would have affected the wntent process.
I would ask an epidemiologist in an interview that what method would they use to convince people suffering from an infectious disease to talk to them ?
