a) A first order reaction is 28.5 % complete in 1908 minutes. Determine the rate constant, k, for the reaction

b) A first order reaction has a of 136.25 minutes. Determine how much time will be required for 39.5% of the original material to decompose.

c) It took 62.43 days for 50% of a substance to decompose. If the reaction follows first order kineticsdetermine the value of the rate constant, k in s-1.

Solutions

Expert Solution

a)

time = 1908 min

rate constant k = 1/t ln (Ao / At)

                         = 1/ 1908 ln (100 / 100 - 28.5)

rate constant k = 1.76 x 10^-4 min-1

b)

half - life = 136.25 min

rate constant = 0.693 / t1/2

                     = 0.693 / 136.25

                    = 5.086 x 10^-3 min-1

rate constant = 1/t ln (Ao / At)

5.086 x 10^-3 = 1/t ln (100 / 100 - 39.5)

t = 98.8 min

time taken = 98.8 min

c)

half - life = 62.43 days = 5393952 sec

rate constant = 0.693 / t1/2

                       = 0.693 / 5393952

rate constant = 1.28 x 10^-7 s-1
