2. In a study investigating placebo pain pills, researchers randomly assigned 82 healthy people to two groups. The first group received placebo pills, and was told they were a new fast, acting pain reliever that cost $2.50 each. The second group received the same placebo pills, but was told the pills were $.10 each. Each group received a mild electrical shock before and after taking the pills. They were then asked if the pills reduced the pain. In the first group (with the expensive pills), 85% said the pills were effective. In the second group (with the discount pills), 61% said they were effective.

a. Provide a 99% confidence interval for the difference between the two groups. b. What are the possible research questions for this study? (Hint: Decide on what the possible hypotheses could be, and then figure out what questions these could address.) (show work without using software to solve)

Solutions

Expert Solution

Let us assume that the two groups contains equal number of people .

Let , n1 : Number of people in the first group receiving treatment that costs $2.50

n2 : Number of people in the second group receiving treatment that costs $0.10

Define , : Population proportion of persons in the first group who said that the pills were effective

: Population proportion of persons in the second group who said that the pills were effective

a ) The 99 % confidence interval for is :

where ,

Required confidence interval :

b ) From the data providede here , we can find out whether expensive pills are more effective in reducing pain than discount pills . That is ,

You are reading a research study where the researchers are investigating osteoarthritis pain. In the study, subjects are given either an anti-inflammatory drug injection or a saline injection to reduce osteoarthritis joint pain. A study subject reported that since she received her study injection, her arthritis pain does not seem to have improved. In fact, her pain is getting worse. What is a possible reason for her continued osteoarthritis pain? The research subject likely received the anti-inflammatory study drug, but...

Depressed patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups: a placebo group, a group that received a moderate dose of the drug, and a group that received a high dose of the drug. After four weeks of treatment, the patients completed the Beck Depression Inventory. The higher the score, the more depressed the patient. We are now also interested if a patient's weight has an effect on the drug's effectiveness. Patients were categorized as either underweight, overweight, or 'medium...

A study2examines chocolate’s effects on blood vessel function in healthy people. In the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 11 people received 46 grams (1.6 ounces) of dark chocolate (which is naturally flavonoid-rich) every day for two weeks, while a control group of 10 people received a placebo consisting of dark chocolate with low flavonoid content. Participants had their vascular health measured (by means of flow-mediated dilation) before and after the two-week study. The increase over the two-week period was measured, with...

The other group was given an instruction booklet on how to do so. They were then asked to make paper cranes for the next hour. The number of paper cranes each subject made was recorded and is listed in the table below. The researchers are interested in whether there was a difference in the...
