How might Chomsky explain a perfectly normal two-year old who used to say “I brushed my teeth” but suddenly starts saying “I brushed my tooths?”

Expert Solution

language as primarily learned or primarily innate.

Language : Language is a medium of communication from one person to another is known as Language . It can be either wriiten, orally spoken or by gestures, symbols etc are known as Language .

According to me , Language must be learnt and we need to have the ability to learn the language which innate .

Cognitive ability is very imprtant in order to learn something . So we know for an extent that how the brains function when it comes to memory or learning . The known fact that there are structures of the brain that control the interpretation and speech generation , it was not clear as to how humans acquired language ability, both in its interpretive sense and its production. So the language itself is learned .

  • Brain structures we’ve studied seem to support Chomsky’s view that we have an inborn universal grammar that will unfold if we are exposed to language.

Chomkey believes that every child has a ‘language acquisition device’. Through which the child  learns the major principles of a language and its grammatical structures .However, all children, regardless of their intellectual ability, become fluent in their native language within five or six years.

Evidence to support the theory :

  • If an adult makes a grammatically incorrect sentence, the child would observe
  • Mistakes such as ‘she growed ’ instead of ‘she grew’ show they are not learning through imitation alone.
