How to refine Uranium

How to refine Uranium

Solutions

Expert Solution

Uranium is a major metal that contributes as a nuclear fuel .

It is a common ore that is found in the earth's crust. The ore is mined and transported to the uranium mills , where it is ground to the powder form and uranium is seperated and then purified to produce a dry powder of uranium oxide . This oxide powder is known as Uranium ore concentrate (UOC).

These concentrates also known as yellow cake ( due to their colour) are transported to chemical conversion plants . This oxide is U3O8.

Now the uranium is seperated from impurities through different chemical processes such as digestion , solvent extraction , denitration etc . A High purity uranium trioxide UO3 is then produced .

These trioxides are then subjected to heavy or light water reactors to produce UO2 or UF6 .

After this , the enrichment of uranium is done by using two techniques , namely , Gaseous diffusion and Gas centrifuges .

The enriched uranium is then pressed into small cylinderical shapes , so that they can be used as the nuclear fuel .

Today, it is known that 9.28% Uranium-238 and 0.72% Uranium-235 in natural Uranium. A) Assuming that the amount of these two isotopes is the same as when the solar system was formed, what is the current age of the natural uranium in the solar system? B) Since the earth's crust was formed 2.5x109 years ago, how much Uranium-238 has been destroyed to this day? Why is uranium-235 the only isotope of uranium that can be used as fuel for a nuclear weapon? A uranium 235 particle is struck by a neutron creating a fission event. The uranium splits into the following atoms and particles: A Barium 141 atom, a Krypton 92 atom, and 3 neutrons. Use this information and your knowledge of electrostatics, fundamental forces, and the conservation of energy to explain (conceptually) how this produces energy. After a fission event occurs the Barium...

In the Resources this week you will explore how to actively generate ideas, refine those ideas, and address problems and challenges. For this Shared Practice, you will practice divergent and convergent thinking to solve a challenge facing you. Select one problem, either in your personal or professional life, that you currently have ownership of and motivation to solve. Practice divergent thinking by generating a list of possible solutions or approaches to your problem. Then, practice convergent thinking and select the...
