Which of the following statements are true? Choose all that apply.

1.The length of a microscope is greater than the sum of the focal lengths of the eyepiece & objective.

2.The purpose of a large primary mirror in a telescope is to have a large magnification.

3.Better resolution is achieved with larger wavelengths.

4. Far-sighted people use converging lenses to correct their vision.

5. Nearsighted people see close up objects in focus.

6. For a telescope, the smaller fe is, the greater the magnification.

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. The length of the tube of the microscope is equal to the sum of focal lengths of objective lens and eye piece. So first option is wrong.

2. Larger objective lens or primary mirror in a telescope is used to collect more amount of light so that image would be bright enough to have a good view at it. Magnification is done by eye piece in the telescope. So option 2 is also wrong.

3. Relation between the resolution R and wavelength is given by

R =   / 2 NA , where NA is numerical aperture

So we can see that resolution is proportional to the wavelength.

Better resolution means lower R . So wavelength would be too shorter.

Thus lower the wavelength , better the resolution.

So option 3 is also wrong

4. Far sightedness is the inability of the eye to focus on nearby objects. In this type of defect , images are focussed behind the retina. So we need a converging lens to focus the incoming light on to the retina perfectly. So far sighted people use a converging lens to correct their vision

5. Nearsightedness or myopia is the eye defect in which a person cannot see objects at and after a certain distance clearly.

These people can view objects near to their eye in focus

So option 5 is right

6. Magnification of the telescope is given by

M = Focal length of the objective / focal length of the eye piece

= Fo / Fe

From the above equation , we can observe that magnification is inversely proportional to the focal length of the eye piece

So , smaller the focal length of eye piece , larger the magnification.

So options 1 , 2 and 3 are wrong and 4 , 5 and 6 are true.
