Why do fish populations typically have a maximum growth rate?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Fish population has a maximum growth rate because a fish lays 100-1000 plus eggs at once and after fertilization, it takes around a month for them to be borne. Generally, it involves 5-6 stages for the egg to become an adult fish. With the use of fertilizers, the production rate of eggs can be increased and a fish will lay more eggs during single ovulation. With the use of fertilizers the growth rate can be as fast as three to four times the usual. And the reproduction process is also simple among fish which helps in faster population growth.

With compared to other edible products, like vegetables, fruits, meat, etc., the growth rate of fish is maximum. As fish can be cultivated throughout the year with a gestation period of hardly a month or two, fish is a very useful source of food for the whole economy and the ecology as a whole. Most of the animals, birds, and reptiles, and other creatures are dependent on fish for their food. We have invented different fertilizers that are used in ponds and lakes to increase the growth rate even faster to sustain our food requirements. Vegetables take a span of 3 months to 1 year as gestation period whereas for meat we need more than 6 months for reproduction and the quantity is also very low compared to fish. Fish is the main source of food among a lot of people all over the world.

The water bodies have a rich fish population with a variety of kinds. The market for fish is quite inelastic and there is high demand for fish in various parts of the nation and the globe. For a continuous increase in the yield, the producers are investing more amount of money for research and development. With an increase in population, the demand for fish has also increased over time and the need to increase the rate of production has emerged. To meet the needs of the economy, different cultivation techniques have been invented. But to save the fish population we need to take control of water pollution and prevention measures with the invention of harmless fertilizers to maintain the quality of the fish population.

From the above discussion, we can see that the gestation period among fish is fastest with easier reproduction process, as compared to other edible products like meat or vegetables, so fish populations have maximum growth rate. And there is a huge need for fish all over the world as fish is one of the main sources of food. For which new technology is being invented to increase the growth rate even further and a decline in growth rate would negatively affect the economy as a whole.
