A particle with rest energy 8.940 GeV decays at rest into two daughter particles, one with rest energy 6.720 GeV and the other with rest energy 130.000 MeV.
(a) What is the mass of the parent particle?
(b) How much energy is released in the decay?
Solution:
As we know;
A)
Given rest energy of the parent particle, E = 8.94 GeV
= 8.94 x10 9 eV
= 8.94 x10 9 x1.6 x10 -19 J
As, E = mc 2
=> Rest mass of the parent particle, m = E / c 2
=> m = (8.94 x10 9 x1.6 x10 -19 )/( 3 x10 8 ) 2
= 1.589 x10 -26 kg
B)
Energy released = 8.94 - (6.72 + 1.3) Gev = 0.92 Gev = 920 MeV
