In addition to climate change, polar bears also face threats from pollution. Use the Internet for research and write a three- to four – paragraph report describing two ways in which the polar bear population in the Arctic is affected by the pollution.
Your report should contain:
Polar bears are at high risk because of worse situation in the artic marine ecosystem.Climate change ,loss of sea ice habitat, toxic pollution and oil exploration are the major threats to polar bears.Climate change causes fewer opportunities to feed and fewer cubs due to lack of food and lack of fat on nursing mothers.
Polar bears exposed to high levels of chemicals through their food have low levels of Vitamin A, thyroid hormones and some antibodies. There are crucial for biological functions such as growth ,reproduction and fight off diseases.Females with partially developed male sex organs (Pseudoheramphrodites) have been observed in 1.5% of polar bears affected by long range of pollutants.
The oil and gas directly discharged into the sea and on the sea ice results in dry up.This cause high risk to the polar bears.Contact with oil spill reduces the insulating effect of the polar bear's fur.In order to compensate this bear will take high energy from their body which will adversely affect their health.Ingesting oil through contaminated prey causes liver and kidney damages in polar bear.
