A truck with a total mass of 1.72 * 10^3 kg has wheels of radius 33.0 cm and moment inertia of 0.800kg-m^2. Find the trucks (a) translational energy and (b) rotational energy when the truck is moving at a speed of 25.0 m/s
Show All Your Work
mass of the truck m = 1.72*103 kg
radius of the wheel r = 33 cm = 0.33 m
moment of inertia I = 0.800 kg.m2
Truck has 4 wheel.
a)
speed of the truck v = 25 m/s
translational kinetic energy (K.E)t = (1/2) mv2
= (1/2)(1.72*103)(25)2
= 537.5 *10^3 J for 1 wheel
Total translational kinetic energy = (537.5*103 *4 ) J
= 2150 *10^3 J
b)
speed of the car v = 25 m/s
rotational energy is
(K.E)r = (1/2) Iω2 [since ω = v/r]
= (1/2)(I)(v/r)2
= (1/2)(0.800)(25/0.33)2
= 2295.68 J for 1 wheel
Total rotational energy of truck = (2295.68*4)J
= 9182.7 J
