Kellogg is an american multinational food manufacturing company. Food systems depends heavily on land, water, and energy resources. It also contributes a lot towards green-house gas emitions which has a huge environmental impact.
It is also estimated that food sector accounts for 30% of global energy requirement.
Functioning of Kellogg and measures taken by them affect environment in following ways:

  • Kellogg cereals are passed through Life Cycle Assesment (LCA) which helps to estimate the environmental impact of breakfast cereals, using ISO 14040/14044 standards. This study helps to improvise the product to decrease its environmental impact by following nature friendly techniques during development as well as supply chain management.
  • Two system boundaries are considered for the above studies:
    • System Boundary 1 : From "Cradle to grave" which will include agriculture, manufacturing, transporatition, packaging and waste management, but it excludes consumption of the product.
    • System Boundary 2 : All mentioned in system boundary 1 alongwith consumpotion of cereals with milk or byproduct as well.
  • From the study it was found that agriculture production with rice production as the main ingredient which affected environment the most. Company has followed various measures to reduce it by engaging with farmers and teaching them techniques like:
    • reduced use of chemical fertilizers
    • have followed crop rotations
    • better land management
  • Kelloggs have modified the product recipies as well to impact less on environment.
  • It had made changes in its packaging, way its been transported to vendors to further optimize carbon footprint in their productions.
