The US Postal Service has recently commissioned a study of the effects of 3d printing on its business. Some were pessimistic, saying 3d printing would be bad for the postal service, while others were optimistic, saying that 3d printing would be a boom to the postal service. Why do you suppose informed people could hold such divergent views?

Solutions

Expert Solution

arguments by pessimistic and counter-arguments by optimistic:-

  • if 3d printers are available cheaply there shall be no longer the need order a product that is miles away. the person can print right at home, this in turn could lead to umemployment. Counter argument:- even if the product is printed at home the materials required for printing the require delivery to the customer's house.
  • companies like amazon, fedex etc are developing drones for delivery, which could again lead to unemployment.counter-argument:- the us postal service delivers products to area that costly to accessed even by postal services itself, in such cases drones have limited power range to cover such isolated places.

infact as the 3d printers get more cheaper and available, the postal services should increase the speed of their delivery system because of offers like same day delivery.Though drones can get the work done more quickly not every human trusts a unmmaned object flying over their heads.
