Consider a beam of light passing from air into glass (refractive index 1.5) at an angle of 30 degrees from vertical. Calculate
- The angle of the reflected light
- The angle of the refracted light
- The intensity of the reflected light
- The intensity of the refracted light
If the baem of light made 30 degrees with the vertical(normal), the reflected light will also be at 30 degrees to the vertical(normal), but on the other side.
2. Refraction follows Snells Law
Where 1 and 2 represent the two media, 1-air and 2-glass.
We know n1=1, n2=1.5 and , substituting we get .
3. Intensity of reflected light is given by
I=(n1-n2)2/(n1+n2)2=(1-1.5)2/(1+1.5)2=1/25=4%
4. Refracted light will have the remaining 96%, considering there is no absorption.
