In an oil fired boiler the fuel had an analysis by mass: carbon 84%, Hydrogen 11%, Sulphur 3%, and Oxygen 2%, remained incombustible. The analysis of dry gas flue gas by volume gave: combined CO2 9.7%, CO 0.5%, O2 2.95%, and N2 86.85%, there being no SO3. Calculate per kg of fuel: 1- Mass of air supplied. 2- Percentage excess air supplied. 3- Mass of flue gas formed. 4- Mass of water vapor formed.

A fire-tube boiler made from carbon steel in which fuel gas flows within the tube while the boiler feed-water along with condensate from the plant flows on the shell-side. Visual inspection revealed heavily localized tubercles were seen on the outside surface of several tubes. After about 11 months of operation, the pipe was leaked and visual inspection found pin holes outside surface contain loose brownish rust. The rust contained chloride and was acidic in nature. An iron boiler of mass 180 kg contains 730 kg of water at 11 ∘C. A heater supplies energy at the rate of 58,000 kJ/h. The specific heat of iron is 450 J/kg⋅C∘, the specific heat of water is 4186 J/kg⋅C∘, the heat of vaporization of water is 2260 kJ/kg⋅C∘. Assume that before the water reaches the boiling point, all the heat energy goes into raising the temperature of the iron or the steam, and none goes to the vaporization...

Make an estimate of the composition of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen in the dry mass of a bacterium. Using knowledge of the size and mass of a bacterium, the fraction of that mass that is "dry mass" (that is, ca. 30%) and the chemical constituents of a cell, figure out the approximate small integers (< 10) for the composition CmHnOpNq, that is, find m, n, p, and q.

The toxic (and energetically inefficient) carbon monoxide produced during combustion can be turned into hydrogen fuel in the water-gas shift reaction shown below. If the reaction is already at equilibrium with CO, water, and hydrogen concentrations all equaling 0.10 M and the carbon dioxide concentration at 0.40 M, and an extra 0.60 mol of carbon dioxide is now added to the 2.0 L reaction vessel, what will be the new hydrogen concentration once equilibrium is reestablished? CO (g) + H2O...
