For the following exercises, find the common difference for the arithmetic sequence provided.

For the following exercises, find the common difference for the arithmetic sequence provided.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Consider the arithmetic sequence,

{0, 1/2, 1, 3/2, 2, …} ...... (1)

Compute the common difference of the given arithmetic sequence, subtract each term from the subsequent term,

a2 – a1 = 1/2 - 0

              = 1/2

Subtract second term from third term,

a3 – a2 = 1 – 1/2

             = 1/2

Subtract third term from fourth term,

a4 – a3 = 3/2 – 1

             = 1/2

And so on.

The difference between any two consecutive terms is equal to 1/2, the common difference of given arithmetic sequence will be d = 1/2.

The difference between any two consecutive terms is equal to 1/2, the common difference of given arithmetic sequence will be d = 1/2.
