Question: Discuss the types of problems that foster parents experience when they care for a previously maltreated child. Give at least two examples of how the particular type of maltreatment the child experienced affects the difficulties the foster parent may face?

Foster parent deals with children who exhibit variety behavioral changes. Large number of young children enters into foster homes with serious mental, physical and behavioral issues. Great effort should to take into consideration to make foster home a positive environment. Foster parents have an important role in assessing child need and provide the needful and also help the child with behavioral issue, only if the child is in a stable home. Some behavior like fear, excessive crying, eating disorder, lying, tantrum, bed wetting and major issues like stealing, running away and aggression can be challenging to the foster parent.

Steps to be taken by the foster parent

  • Be patient; seek guidance from the pediatrician or counselor.
  • Interact with the birth parent positively to understand what exactly the child went through. This is actually challenging for the foster parent due to various issues.
  • Do not judge the child because of the family background.
  • Training to deal with behavioral issues. Do a lot of reading with this regards.
  • Talk to the child, pay attention to the developments.
  • Find time to relax yourself and deal with stress.
  • Find support from other foster parents.
