Connect the concepts for the following terms
- edge effect
- buffer zone
- corridor
- carrying capacity
Ans :-) Edge effect refer to change in population or community that occur at boundary of two habitats. In simple words we can say that a break in continuity between two adjacent habitats leading to changes in biological and environmental conditions. Edges serve as energy traps since they are the points where nutrients, materials and organisms flow across ecosystem and there is increased cycling of nutrients and materials at the edges. Edges create beneficial microclimates.
Buffer zone - it refers to a zone or area that serve not for anthropogenic use but as conserved natural habitat where plants and animals can thrive. Buffer zone are area created to enhance the protection of specific conservation area often peripheral to it. Within buffer zone resource use may be legally restricted often to a lesser degree than adjacent protected area so as to form transition zone.
Corridor - is link of wildlife habitat, generally native vegetation which joins two or more larger areas of similar wildlife habitat. Corridors are critical for maintaining ecological processes including allowing for the movement of population and continuation of viable population.
Carrying capacity - It refers to the maximum number of given species that an areas resources can sustain indefinitely without depleting or degrading those resources.
