A student reacts 58g of salicylic acid with 10 mL of acetic anhydride producing 3.3g of acetyl salicylic acid. What is the percent yield of the reaction?
mass of salicylic acid = 58 g
mass of acetic anhydride = volume x density
= 10 x 1.08
= 10.8 g
reaction:
salicylic acid + acetic anhydride ------------------------> acetyl salicylic acid
138.12 g 102.09 g 180.16 g
58 g 10.8 g
138.12 g salicylic acid ---------------------> 102.09 acetic anhydride
58 g salicylic acid --------------------> 58 x 102.09 / 138.12 = 48.87 g acetic anhydride needed.
so it is lesser amount . limiting reaegnt is acetic anhydride
102.09 g acetic anhydride ---------------> 180.16 acetyl salicylic acid
10.8 g acetic anhydride = 180.16 x 10.8 / 102.09 = 19.1 g
thereotical yield = 19.1 g
actual yield = 3.3 g
percent yield = 3.3 x 100 / 19.1
= 17.3 %
