what might you look for as a signature of life on the red planet (mars)? What might you look for in the microenviornment? (this is a microbiology question and we have been looking at different metabolic approaches of microorganisms, their niches. please help explain the answer to this question!)

Solutions

Expert Solution

A signature of life on the red planet is water which is essentially required for all terristial animals. If the trace of water is found then the sign of life may exist. So the first priority for finding life in Mars is to search of water resourse.

In the microenvironment of mars atmosphere, prokaryotes like certain bacteria , microorganisms may look for the signature of life. For the microbial growth the essential nutrients , elements are very essential.  A dense CO2 atmosphere was found in mars . The metabolism of microorganism can be classified for utilising the different carbon source --

a. Autotrophic: carbon is obtained from carbon dioxide

b. Heterotrophic : carbon from organic compound

c. Mixotrophic : carbon is obtained from organic compound and fixation of carbon dioxide.

There are several mission for searching of microorganism in mars environment that may show the existance of life with some rays of hope.

You are part of a design team for future exploration of the planet Mars, where g= 3.7m/s2. An explorer is to step out of a survey vehicle traveling horizontally at 33 m/s when it is 1200 m above the surface and then fall freely for 20 s. At that time, a portable advanced propulsion system (PAPS) is to exert a constant force that will decrease the explorer's speed to zero at the instant she touches the surface. The total mass...

The planet Mars has a diameter of 6772 km, and it orbits the sun at a distance of 227.9 x 10^6 km. If the sun is assumed to radiate like a blackbody at 5760 K, and Mars has an albedo of 0.15 ( reflects 15% of incident radiation back to space), estimate the average temperature of the Martian surface. Ignore the effects of the thin Martian atmosphere.

NASA has sent satellites to the planet Mars. The method is to put the satellite into a Keplerian orbit whose perihelion is at the position of the Earth and whose aphelion is at the position of Mars. The satellite does not travel to Mars under rocket power; it just moves under the influence of the Sun's gravity. Calculate the number of days the trip to Mars will take.

Describe how the motion of a planet (like Mars) among the stars of the zodiac on the sky is qualitatively different from the motion of an object like our Sun among the stars of the zodiac. Describe the two hypotheses as to the origin or reason for the Sun’s motion relative to the stars of the Zodiac, first the self-centered view then the more modern less self- centered hypothesis.

Suppose a planet was discovered with life and you were a member of a team of scientists who were selected to study these new life forms. During your analyses of fossils from this new planet you discovered that speciation rates appear to be 10 times faster than on Earth.
