NASA has sent satellites to the planet Mars. The method is to put the satellite into a Keplerian orbit whose perihelion is at the position of the Earth and whose aphelion is at the position of Mars. The satellite does not travel to Mars under rocket power; it just moves under the influence of the Sun's gravity. Calculate the number of days the trip to Mars will take.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Period of earth around sun T = 1 year = 31557600 s

aphelion length of earth a = (GMT2/42 )1/3 = (6.67x10-11x1.972x1030x315576002/42 )1/3 = 149151.28x106 m

perihelion length of earth b = [a2(1 - 0.92)]1/2 = [(149151.28x106)2x(1 - 0.92)]1/2 = 65013.54x106 m

In the problem aphelion length of earth is mars aphelion length

If perihelion is at the position of the Earth and aphelion is at the position of Mars

then the distance from mars to earcth R = (a2 + b2)1/2 = [(149151.28x106)2 + (65013.54x106)2]1/2

                                                          R = 91943.03x106 m

Time taken by satellites to the planet Mars Tp = (R3/GM)1/2 = [(91943.03x106)3/(6.67x10-11x1.972x1030]1/2

                                                     Tp = 2430870.49 s = 28.13 days

NASA has sent about a dozen robotic lander and rover missions to Mars, and only seven have succeeded. One of these missions, the Mars Polar Lander, was lost due to a problem with a sensor. A sensor onboard the spacecraft triggered the shutdown of the lander's engines when it thought the craft had landed on the planet, but it had not reached the surface yet; in fact, the craft was 131 feet above the surface when the engines were turned...

The planet Mars has a diameter of 6772 km, and it orbits the sun at a distance of 227.9 x 10^6 km. If the sun is assumed to radiate like a blackbody at 5760 K, and Mars has an albedo of 0.15 ( reflects 15% of incident radiation back to space), estimate the average temperature of the Martian surface. Ignore the effects of the thin Martian atmosphere.

NASA has launched a mission to a newly discovered object, spherical in shape. A satellite is given a gravitationally driven circular orbit around the object. The altitude of the satellite in its orbit is equal to the radius of the object, and it takes 19.4 × 103 ??? for the satellite to complete one orbit. At the same time, a rover lands on the surface of the object. NASA engineers notice one of the support arms on it is broken...

Suppose that a satellite defense system is established with five satellites acting independently. Individually, each satellite has a 0.85 probability of detecting an incoming ballistic missile. What is the probability that at least one of the five satellites detect an incoming ballistic missile? Round to four decimal places.

NASA has asked your team of rocket scientists about the feasibility of a new satellite launcher that will save rocket fuel. NASA's idea is basically an electric slingshot that consists of 4 electrodes arranged in a horizontal square with sides of length d at a height h above the ground. The satellite is then placed on the ground aligned with the center of the square. A power supply will provide each of the four electrodes with a charge of +Q/4...
