Need an introduction, a brief literature review
Base on the Black Baptist church cultural background, social position, values of Middle income
INTRODUCTION
•The most common CAM modalities are: reflexology, Chinese Medicine and acupuncture, massage, shiatsu, twina, homeopathy and naturopathy.
A BRIEF LITERATURE REVIEW BASE ON THE BLACK BAPITIST CHURCH CULTURAL BACKGROUND -
• This is aliterature review examines the data presented in a series of empirical articles on the use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) techniques used in increasing numbers by patients in the geriatric and cancer patient populations.
• The review of five CAM modalities identified as Havening,
Mindfulness, Reiki, T’ai Chi, and Self-Compassion are known to be
used among these populationsin an effort to manage disease and pain
as well as reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety without
pharmaceutical intervention.
Findings on efficacy these five CAM modalities are presented, as
well as implications for further research are discussed. Keywords:
Complementary AND Alternative Medicine, Havening, Mindfulness,
Self-Compassion
• The design was a descriptive, comparative study of 183 elders who reported the number of CAM used and satisfaction with CAM. A convenience sample was recruited through community service organizations in the state of Mississippi. The availability of elders through the support groups, sampling bias, subject effect, and self-report were limitations of the study.
SOCIAL POSITION
• Complementary and alternative medicine and traditional medicine are important social phenomena. National and regional studies in the ‘developed’ world have shown high usage of CAM, especially for those with chronic diseases, such as cancer . In the ‘developing’ world, traditional medicines can be the ‘mainstay’ of health care delivery, particularly in remote or rural areas. What is clear is that these phenomena are socially patterned over time and space.
VALUE OF MIDDLE INCOME
• It is frequently stated in the scientific literature, official
reports and the press that 80% of Asian and African populations use
traditional medicine to meet their healthcare needs; however, this
statistic was first reported in 1983.
This study aimed to update knowledge of the prevalence of TM use and the characteristics of those who access it, to inform health policy-makers as countries seek to fulfil the WHO TM strategy.
