A 10.00 g mixture of NaHCO3 and Na2CO3 was heated and yielded 0.0274 moles H2O and 0.106 moles CO2. Calculate the percent composition of the mixture.
2NaHCO3 → Na2O + 2CO2 + H2O
Na2CO3 → Na2O + CO2
What is the percent NaHCO3 of the mixture?
What is the percent Na2CO3 of the mixture?
Following is the Solution to the given question, in.... image format.........................
Since, we have Molar Mass of NaHCO3 = 84 g/mol ...and we know Moles of NaHCO3 (i.e. 'X' ) = 0.0548 moles
and Molar Mass of Na2CO3 = 106 g/mol ...and we know Moles of Na2CO3 (i.e. 'Y' ) = 0.0512 moles
Therefore.... we have:
Mass of NaHCO3 = (84 g/mol) x (0.0548 mole) = 4.6 g (i.e. grams in 10 g Mixture ).... and...
..... Mass of Na2CO3 = (106 g/mol) x (0.0512 mole) = 5.427 g (i.e. grams in 10 g Mixture)
Therefore:
% NaHCO3 = (4.6 g / 10.0 g ) x 100 = 46 % .....in Mixture
... % Na2CO3 = (5.4 g / 10.0 g ) x 100 = 54 % .....in Mixture
The above are the correct Answers to the given problem......
