What is the consequence of SCM on the heat of hydration?

What is the consequence of SCM on the heat of hydration?

Solutions

Expert Solution

SCM refers to supplementary cementitious materials such as Fly Ash, Blast Furnace Slag, Silica Fume, Quartz Powder etc. These materials are often added to concrete to make concrete mixtures more economical, reduce permeability, increase strength or influence other concrete properties. It also improve the workability of Fresh concrete and enhance the durability of hardened concrete SCM reduces the embodied energy and CO2 emissions from the concrete. Concrete setting time may be retarded with some SCM used at higher percentage. This can be beneficial in hot weather. The properties of SCMs concrete are described through a pozzolanic reaction between a pozzolana and calcium hydroxide. The Pozzolanic reaction generates less heat than ordinary portland cement because the reaction is similar to a C2S reaction.

SiO2/ Al2O3 + Ca(OH)2 → C-S-H gel

Most important consideration in the use of SCM, is sustainability dimension of concrete, as with increased use of SCM, we are expecting to reduce substantial volume of CO2 emissions, thereby mitigating the environmental impact of concrete production.

Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) has a lattice energy of -887 kJ/mol and a heat of hydration of -932 kJ/mol. How much solution could be heated to boiling by the heat evolved by the dissolution of 24.5 g of NaOH? (For the solution, assume a heat capacity of 4.0 J/g⋅∘C, an initial temperature of 25.0 ∘C, a boiling point of 100.0 ∘C, and a density of 1.05 g/mL.) Express your answer using two significant figures.

1a. What is CR3? What is the normal ligand for CR3, and what is the consequence when CR3 is bound by this ligand? While the 2 antibodies used both bind extracellular domains on CR3, they do not bind to the exact same part of the CR3 molecule. The M1/70 antibody (Ab) binds the same portion of CR3 as does the normal ligand (which you answered in 1a). The 5C6 antibody binds a separate extracellular domain. When these antibodies are used...
