are polysaccharides formed by hydration or dehydration reactions?
The polysaccharide are formed by the dehydration reaction with the loss of water molecule. Polysaccharide are made up of large chain of monosaccharides. the bonds in the polysaccharide chain between two monosaccharide. The bones in the polysaccharide chains between two monosaccharide is known as a glycosidic bond. Poly means many and saccharide means sugar . There are two type of polysaccharides that is heteropolysaccharide and homo polysaccharide . Homo polysaccharide is made up of one type of monosaccharide . Heteropolysaccharides made up of different type of polysaccharides. Glycosidic bond consist of oxygen molecule . On the both side of oxygen atom, carbon is present. The hydroxyl group is released.one molecule of monosaccharide lost one hydrogen positive ions. And the other molecules lost 1 hydrooxide ions . This result in the loss of one water molecule. As two molecules of hydrogen atom and one molecule of oxygen atom is released. This process is known as dehydration reaction. The polysaccharide forms large chain. And it is made up of large number of monosaccharide. . For example the glycogen is a polysaccharide and it is a storage form of glucose in the animals. It is made up of Alpha 1,4 and alpha 1,6 glycosidic bonds . The 1,4 alpha linkage leads to chain structure and the 1,6 Alpha linkage leads to branched structure with the release of hydroxyl group. Other polysaccharide are glucose , hyaluronic acid.
