Expert Solution

According to newton's second law of motion which is given by s=ut+(1/2)a. Where s is the distance, u is the initial velocity, a is the acceleration and t is the time. In the case of a projectile, motion acceleration is due to the gravity hence Range of projectile motion is given by

R= , Where u is the initial velocity of the object,g is the acceleration due to gravity and is the angle between velocity and the horizontal surface.

1) The answer to the first question is the appropriate angle in which projectile can be launched. Because as we can see that the range of the projectile depends basically on the angle, initial velocity of the object. hence it is the correct answer.

2) The answer is to increase the distance they travel before hitting the water because as the swimmer jumps he makes a projectile jump to travel the maximum distance as stated above the range depends on angle of the projectile, From the above formula we can say to travel the maximum distance the swimmer will try to jump at 45 degrees. So, in conclusion, the swimmer basically does a projectile jump to travel maximum distance before hitting the water hence it is the right answer.
