Suppose I had a budget of $150 dollars, what sort of relevant hardware / programming circuits or circuit related devices could I purchase and invest in in order to make myself more competitive in today's electrical engineering job market? Initially I wanted to invest in arduino, but I heard arduino is outdated and not beneficial in today's market. What are similar more relevant technololgies that I can invest in as a recent electrical engineering graduate looking for an entry level position?
Congratulations for choosing such an interesting engineering stream. Well as you said Arduino board is outdated, it's not like that if you want to learn something you must start from old things, because technology remains same only changes takes place is version and hardware bad software, you will write few lines of code for same work in latest version and hundreds of line in oldest version. Therefore if you want to learn something in-depth go for some older version but popular one and then go for newer or latest version. As you said you have around $150, it's too much if you want to learn how to write and make some small projects. You may purchase LPC 2148 arm microcontroller with keil software and flash magic for burning code, it will cost you around 80-100 dollars. But if you want to go for some latest one you may purchase their extended version but trust me you will not learn anything from newer version as most of the things are now readymade, just edit the code and you will get your project ready. You can add one more simulation software such as multisim or Proteus software. You have many options but Proteus and arm microcontroller lpc2148 is enough for learning purpose.
