Given a circular sheet of paper with a weight of 0.15 ounces and a diameter of 4.7 in. Calculate the basis weight in terms of g/m^2. Assuming the circle was cut from a piece of copy paper, what would be the basis weight of the paper in lb/ream?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Diameter = 4.7 inch

Radius = 4.7 / 2 = 2.35 inch

area of circle is

A = (22 / 7) * (2.35)^2

A = 17.3564 inch^2 (

1 inch = 2.54 * 10^-4 m^2

Area A = 17.3564 * 2.54 * 10^-4 m^2

A = 4.408 * 10^-3 m^-2

1 ounce = 28.3495 g

0.15 ounces = 28.3495 * 0.15 g

                        = 4.2524 g

basis weight = 4.2524 g * 4.408 * 10^-3 m^-2

                        = 0.01874 g/m^2

1 g = 0.0022046 lbs

1 ream = 500 sheets* (93.5 inch^2) * (2.54 * 10^-2 m^2 / inch^2)

1 ream = 30.1612 m^2

1 m^2 = 0.03315 ream

0.01874 g/m^2 = 0.01874 * (0.002204 lbs / 0.03315 ream)

                           = 1.246 * 10^-3 lbs / ream

A thin circular sheet of glass with a diameter 5 meters is rubbed with a cloth on one surface and becomes charged uniformly. A chloride ion (a chlorine atom which has gained one extra electron) passes near the glass sheet. When the chloride ion is near the center of the sheet, at a location 0.8 mm from the sheet, it experiences an electric force of 8e-15 N, toward the glass sheet. In this problem, use the value ε0 = 8.85e-12...

Air flows down a pipe with a diameter of 0.15 m. At the inlet to the pipe, the Mach number is 0.1, the pressure is 70 kPa, and the temperature is 35°C. If the flow can be assumed to be adiabatic and if the mean friction factor is 0.005, determine the length of the pipe if the Mach number at the exit is 0.6. Also, find the pressure and temperature at the exit to the pipe.
