You are tasked with a process selection project. There are two processes (A and B) that could potentially work for your application (cutting tubing to a specified length). Sample data is provided by the two companies. Out of the 16 samples from process A, you find an average of 17.92 inches and a standard deviation of 1.98 inches. Thirteen samples were taken from process B improvement and had an average length of 16.58 inches and a standard deviation of 1.30 inches.

  1. Use a 95% confidence interval to determine if the population variances differ
  2. Based on the results from the previous exercise, use the appropriate 95% confidence interval to determine if the mean lengths from the two populations differ.
  3. Of the 16 samples from process A, 2 are found to be defective. From process B, 1 of the 13 samples is found to be defective. Conduct the appropriate hypothesis test to determine if the proportion of defective units from the two processes differ. Use α=0.10

Solutions

Expert Solution

a)

confidence interval contains 1,so we can say that there is not sufficient evidence to conclude that population variance differ.

b)

confidence interval does not contain zero so we can say that mean length from two population differs.

c)

confidence interval contains 0 so we can say that two proportion of defective units cannot differ.
