Question 5. A college library has five copies of a certain text on reserve. Two copies (1 and 2) are first printings, and the other three (3, 4, and 5) are second printings. A student examines these 5 books in random order (without replacement), stopping only when a second printing has been selected. For example, one outcome is the student only looks at copy 4, another outcome is the student looks at the sequence of copies 2,1,5.
a) Use a tree diagram and then set notation to list all outcomes
in the sample space (S) b) Determine the probability of each simple
event in the sample space.
Define the following events:
Let A be the event that exactly one book is examined.
Let B be the event that book 4 is selected.
Let C be the event that book 2 is examined.
c) List the outcomes in A and determine its probability.
d) List the outcomes in B and determine its probability.
e) List the outcomes in C and determine its probability.
f) Among events A, B, and C, which are disjoint?
