  1. Write the (a) balanced equation for the formation of liquid water from hydrogen and oxygen gas, and use it to explain the following terms: (b) chemical reaction, (c) reactant, (d) product.

  1. Balance the following equations:

    1. C + O2 → CO

    2. CO + O2 → CO2

    3. Na + H2O → H2 + NaOH

    4. Zn + HCl → ZnCl2 + H2

    5. NaOH + H2SO4 → H2O + Na2SO4

    6. NH3 + CuO → Cu + N2 + H2O

  1. Calculate the mass in grams of iodine (I2) that will react completely with 20.4 g of aluminum (Al) to form aluminum iodide (AlI3).

  1. The annual production of sulfur dioxide from burning coal and fossil fuels, auto exhaust, and other sources is about 26 million tons. The equation for the reaction is

    S(s) + O2(g) → SO2(g)

How much sulfur (in tons), present in the original materials, would result in that quantity of SO2?

Solutions

Expert Solution

1a)In the balanced chemical equation the number of atoms of each element in the reactant should be equal to the number of atoms of each element in the product.

In the formation of water ,H2(g)&O2(g) react to form H2O(l)

The reaction represented as H2(g)+O2(g) gives H2O(l)

Here the number of atoms in the reactant (left side) are Hydrogen is2& Oxygen is2 .But in the product (right hand side),The number of Hydrogen is2&number of Oxygen is 1.So we need to equalize both side.Increase the number of 1Molecule of H2 To 2 molecule of H2 in the reactant.and increase the number of 1 molecule of H2O to 2molecule ofH2O.Hence the balanced equation written as

2H2(g)+O2(g)    gives 2H2O(l)

Here in the reactant, Total H atoms is 4&total Oxygen atoms is 2

In the product ,           Total H atoms is 4&total Oxygen atoms is 2,

b)Chemical reaction is a process in which one or more substance [here H2(g)&O2(g)] react to form new substance ie H2O(l).

c)The left hand side of the equation represent reactant. Here H2&O2are reactant

d)Right hand side of the equation represent product,Here O2 is the product.
