The proximo distal growth means development from the centre of
the body to outwards.
We can classify the growth of a human body in three stages
- Prenatal
- Infancy
- Childhood
Prenatal
- The period from conception to birth
- Brain/spinal cord and organ system in trunk develops before the
arms and legs
- Arms develop before hands
- Hands and feet develop before finger and toes
- Finger and toe muscles will develop at the end.
Infancy
- Infants can control their shoulders before they have control
over arms or individual fingers
- At three months, infants can grasp objects and make fists, but
lack the ability to point at objects or not able to reach for
objects
Childhood
- The Childs main movements are by elbows and wrists
- At this time the child will develop most of the fine motor
skills.
