  • If the efficiency of an engine is less than the Carnot efficiency, it shows the heat engine consist of irreversible cycle and hence the engine is irreversible heat engine.
  • Carnot engine is the reversible heat engine wothout any irreversibility.
  • 1) The reversible heat engine assumes heat supplied and heat rejection process to be isothermal. But in actual engine this process cannot be maintained at constant temperature which results in irreversibility in the cycle during heat transfer and hence the real engine efficiency is always less than Carnot efficiency.
  • 2) Friction is the another form of irreversibility associated with bodies in motion. A real engine always involve friction between two moving surfaces. This friction results in irreversibility of cycle and hence the cycle becomes irreversible. Therefore, the real engine efficiency is always less than carnot efficiency.
