Two numbers are in the ratio 3:5. When each of these numbers is increased by 10, their ratio becomes 5:7. Find the greater number.
Let us consider the two numbers as x and y respectively
According to the given condition
x/y = 3/5
3y=5x—(i)
Also given that
x+10 / y+10 = 5/7
7x+70=5y+50
5y=7x +20—(ii)
So from equations (i) and (ii) we get
y=5x/3,y=7x+20/5
On equation the values of y we get
5x/3 = 7x+20/5
25x=3(7x+20)
25x=21x+60
4x=60
x=15
From (i)
y=5x/3 = 5(15) / 3 = 75/3 = 25
x =15 and y = 25.
Hence,the greatest number is 25.
The greatest number is 25.
