Collaborative filtering is used to filter information and data collected on the basis of how the other users respond to the items. It is widely used to implement recommendation system. It relies on the preferences rather than on the features of the item , and that the users agreeing now will also agree in the future. In such filtering, usually a technique based on similarity index is applied.

For example: Two users using a particular shopping website have similar interests in clothes. One of the user while using the website ordered a dress. Another user still hasn’t seen that dress. Since the system knows that both the users have similar tastes that dress will also be recommended to that another user.
