what role does the UN system play in global politics?
The history of the United Nations
The United Nations was established shortly after World War II as an
intergovernmental organization. It was to become the successor of
the League of Nations, formed by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919
to promote international relations, peace and prosperity. When it
did not combat the Second World War, the League of Nations ceased
its activities. In 1945, delegates from 50 nations met in San
Francisco, where they drafted the proposed Charter of the United
Nations. On 26 June 1945, the Delegates signed the Treaty, which
was then ratified by the United Kingdom , the United States,
France, China and the Soviet Union and a host of other Member
States on 24 October 1945. Although the United Nations originally
had a small 51 member states (Poland, which was not included in the
United Nations Meeting, was the 51st), as of 2014 its membership
grew to 193.
Role does the UN system
play in global politics
There are four fundamental roles of the United Nations:
1.Maintaining stability
2.Cultivating friendly links between states
3.Helping to reduce poverty, malnutrition, sickness and illiteracy
and to foster respect for human rights
4.Providing a forum where nations work together with these
objectives
