Ans to Q No. 1: Facility layout is important to minimize production delays, maximize the efficacy of the production line and to avoid any bottlenecks. Proper facility layout also helps to mitigate wastage in equipment investment and ensure a smooth flow of work.
The fundamental differences between a product layout and a process layout are:
1) In product layout, machines are laid out in accordance with the production timeline that is required while making the product. Whereas, in process layout, machines performing the same operation are clubbed together.
2) Product layout is necessary for large scale manufacturing. While process layout is used by small manufacturers.
Ans to Q No. 2: The process structure in services is different from the process structure in manufacturing in the sense that since service operations produce intangible products, they are highly customizable whereas since the manufacturing process produces tangible goods, it is a standardized procedure.
