Certain mannerisms are considered as offensive in some cultures and the same are highlighted in the given video. It refers to the fact that a thumbs up sign isn’t always friendly and in some states it is considered offensive. Similarly in Japan, business cards are to be dealt with care. If it is handled without care, it can be perceived as disrespect. Also, complimenting in certain cultures sends an obligation to the host such that the items are then gifted to the ‘complimenter’. In India and some other regions it is considered rude to eat with left hand. These are all implicit norms which are culturally created. Types of nonverbal communication -- chronemics, facial expressions, and body movements create a lot of difference in the manner in which they are perceived depending on the cultures. Gestures such as using the thumb can be a sign of victory but may be perceived as a derogatory remark in certain cultures.
