1. What kind of repulsive interactions exist in the boat shaping of cyclohexane?

2. How many 1,3-diaxial interactions does the cis-1,2-dichlorocyclohexane isomer have?

3. How many gauche interactions exist for cis-1,2-dichlorocyclohexane?

4. Show the lowest energy conformer for 1,3-dichlorocyclohexane.

5. Is there a difference in energy between cis-1,4-dichlorocyclohexane conformers?

6. Why is there a difference in energy between the trans-1,4-dichlorocyclohexane conformers?

PLEASE ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS AND DON'T WRITE IT ON A PAPER. ANSWERS MUST BE SHORT AND SIMPLE. THANKS!

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. The boat form of cyclohexane consists of four gauche-butane and two eclipsed-butane repulsive interactions.

2. The cis-1,2- dichlorocyclohexa isomer have two 1,3- diaxial interactions.

3. There is three gauche- butane interaction in cis-1,2- dichlorocyclohexane. Two for one axial chloro and one for axial, equatorial dichloro. From the above structures.

4. The e,e conformer of cis- 1,3 - dichlorocyclohexane is the lowest energy conformer.

5. There is no energy difference between the two conformers of cis- 1,4- dichlorocyclohexane as both are identical.

6. Trans - 1,4- dichlorocyclohexane exists in two non-equivalent e, e- and a, a- conformations. The a, a-conformation is destabilized by four gauche interactions.
