pre lab questions:

1. Define “acid” according to the Bronsted-Lowry theory of acids and bases.

2. Hypothesize what might occur to the sodium bicarbonate when it reacts in Part B of this experiment. What will you see?

3. The NaI might undergo one of two different reactions when it reacts with 18 M sulfuric acid in Part C of this experiment. Describe what happens in both of these possibilities (in words or with reaction equations)

4. Lookup the physical appearance of I2 and Cl2. What do they look like?

5. Hypothesize what might occur to the magnesium and copper metals when they react with HCl in Part D of this experiment.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans 1. According to Lowry Theroy, Acids are the substances which donate protons(H+) and bases are those which accepts protons.

examaple:- Acid:- HNO3 = H + + NO3-

Base:- NH3 + H+ = NH4+

Ans2. Sodium bicarbonate, is a salt and on dissociation it gives Na+ and HCO3-

HCO3- = H + + CO32-

NaoH = Na + OH-

and hence NaHCO3 is a salt of weak acid and strong base

Ans 3. 2NaI + H2SO4 = Na2SO4 + 2HI

NaI + H2SO4 = NaHSO4 + HI

Ans 4. Cl2 is a gas and I2 is a solid in physical appearance. I2 is a solid due to strong vanderwaal force of attraction due to its large size.

Ans 5. Mg + HCl = MgCl2 + H2

   Cu + HCl = No reaction because reduction potential value for Cu is greater than Hydrogen.
